Overview
The Sphynx cat may lack fur, but it has an outsized personality. These cats are affectionate, bold and love to be the center of attention.
History and Origins
A natural genetic mutation produced the first hairless kitten in Canada in 1966. Breeders crossed these cats with Devon Rex to establish the Sphynx breed.
Price Range
Kittens cost US $1,500–$3,000 or more
Characteristics
Medium‑sized cats with warm, suede‑like skin. Their large ears, lemon‑shaped eyes and prominent cheekbones give them a unique look.
Personality and Behavior
Sphynxes are extremely affectionate and outgoing. They follow their owners everywhere and enjoy climbing and playing.
If you appreciate sociable cats but prefer one with fur, the Siamese offers a similarly affectionate and vocal personality with a sleek, short coat.
Care
Regular baths are necessary to remove skin oils. Clean their ears and trim nails frequently. Provide warm beds and sweaters to keep them comfortable.
Health Concerns
Common issues include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dental disease, skin problems or hereditary myopathy.
Adoption and Breeders
Work with breeders who test for heart and skin conditions. Sphynx rescues sometimes have cats needing homes.
