Overview

The Abyssinian is one of the oldest domestic breeds. Known for its ticked coat and playful personality, the Aby loves to explore and interact with its human companions. They share a high energy level with the Bengal, albeit in a smaller package.

History and Origins

Despite legends linking them to ancient Egypt, genetic studies suggest Abys developed along the Indian Ocean coast and parts of southeast Asia. They appeared at the 1871 Crystal Palace Cat Show and nearly died out during World War II.

Price Range

Kittens cost US $500–$1,500

Characteristics

Medium‑sized cats with lean, muscular bodies, large ears and expressive eyes. The short coat features bands of color on each hair, giving a warm, glowing appearance.

Personality and Behavior

Abys are active and curious. They enjoy climbing, playing and exploring. While they are affectionate, they prefer to sit next to you rather than on your lap.

If you’re seeking a similarly graceful cat with a penchant for conversation, the Siamese combines a slender physique with a vocal personality.

Care

Minimal grooming is needed; a weekly combing suffices. Provide tall cat trees and interactive toys. Regular dental care is important.

Puzzle feeders and dangling toys are ideal for keeping an Abyssinian entertained and mentally sharp.

Health Concerns

Potential issues include periodontal disease, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia and pyruvate kinase deficiency.

Adoption and Breeders

Work with breeders who test for genetic diseases. Abyssinian rescues and shelters occasionally have cats needing homes. Because they need plenty of stimulation, consider adopting two Abys or providing another active pet for companionship.
